When a Zaurus SL-5500, and SL-5000D device is booted, it will by default will boot in 'INIT 5' mode with a getty daemon running on the serial port (/dev/ttyS0). If this is not disabled, applications will not be able to receive data (data can be sent in this state). To disable the getty daemon you must 'soft reset' the PDA in 'INIT 3' mode by performing the following:
1) Soft reset the device (toggle the battery cover switch on the back of the device)
2) Slide open the keypad cover to display the keypad
3) Power on the Zaurus (read the next step first, as there is only a short window for action)
4) During the boot process you will see a 'Wait' message displayed followed by a number that decrements from 5. Before the number decrements to 0, press the '/?' key on the keypad. This will display the following menu
q (x): Qtopia
a (e): Linux Console
e (e): init 3 (ttyS0: -free-)
r (e): init 4 (ttyS0: terminal)
t (e): init 5 (ttyS0: pppd)
5) Press the 'E' key on the keypad. The device will boot in INIT 3 mode with the serial port configured for SerialPort (free from the getty daemon). Note: this must only be done when the device is soft reset. i.e. powering down the Zaurus will not affect the INIT setting.
Note: To enable synchronization with Intellisync, soft reset the Zaurus in INIT 5 mode (the default). The SL-5500 must be in INIT5 mode for Intellisync to work - with USB or serial.
Note: there is a serious bug in the Zaurus related to INIT 3 mode that affects both the consumer SL-5500 and SL-5000D developer version. More information...
