Scanfob 2002 Setup With Windows Vista (Bluetooth HID Keyboard Mode)

Use OPN-2002 with Windows Vista via Bluetooth HID (scanner behaves like keyboard)

Support Home

The OPN-2002 is has built-in firmware programs allowing significant customization.
On initial release of the scanner in April 2009, the OPN-2002 shipped with firmware RFGS0223.s32. This document outlines use with that firmware build.

This document outlines setup using the Microsoft Bluetooth stack.
If your computer uses a different Bluetooth stack, it is very likely that you can update settings to use the Microsoft Bluetooth stack.

Open the Bluetooth dialog via the Control Panel Bluetooth option, or the Bluetooth icon in the System Tray.

OPN-2002 Bluetooth HID setup Bluetooth Devices

Click "Add..." button, then check "My device is setup and ready to be found"

Before clicking "Next >" insure the Scanfob OPN-2002 has been setup in the correct mode as follows:

1) Set Scanfob OPN-2002 to Bluetooth HID mode
This is done by scanning the control barcodes as follows:
Set >"BCHA > End
Note: after scanning Scanfob Set control code, the scanner will chirp while the scanner is in setup mode.
Also note the Set / End barcodes are the same barcode so can be used interchangeably.

2) Set the Scanfob OPN-2002 in "Enable authentication" mode
Scan Set > AUTE > End

3) Have the control barcodes for numbers (Q0, Q1, Q2, ..., Q9) printed out and handy.

4) Set the Scanfob OPN-2002 in "Manually connect" mode
Scan +-CONN-+ (no need to scan Set/End with this code)
At this point the LED on the Scanfob OPN-2002 should begin to flash

IMPORTANT NOTE With RFGS0223.s32 firmware build:
The setup process is rather strict, so at any point something goes wrong (e.g. a timeout occurs) you may need to begin back at step 1) above.

Now click "Next >" on the above dialog, and Vista Bluetooth stack will search for Bluetooth devices.

OPN-2002 Bluetooth HID Searching

Vista Bluetooth stack will display the Bluetooth devices found as shown below.

OPN-2002 Bluetooth HID Found

Select the OPN-2002 device and click "Next >". On the dialog below select
"Use the passkey found in the documentation"

Note: Due to the fact that the setup process for firmware build RFGS0223.s32 has default timeouts
that make long passkeys difficult to enter, it is recommended a short passkey is used.

Then enter the value of your choice - in this example the Bluetooth passkey will be "0"
then click "Next >".

OPN-2002 Bluetooth HID Enter Passkey

Windows Vista will then check the Bluetooth passkey. When the screen below displays,
the Scanfob OPN-2002 will begin to beep to indicate it is time to scan in the passkey.

Scan the control barcode for the digit "0" (Q0) from the page printed and prepared
at the start of this setup - no need to scan the Set/End before/after scanning Q0.

After scanning Q0, then scan the "End PIN-code label" (PINE) control barcode.

OPN-2002 Bluetooth HID Passkey Check

Shortly after scanning the (PINE) control barcode above, the Scanfob should emit
a multi-tone to indicate it has Bluetooth connected, and the dialog below should be shown.

OPN-2002 Bluetooth HID Connection Done

Click "Finish" and the OPN-2002 device should be shown in the Windows Vista Bluetooth Devices dialog as shown below.

Now simply put the cursor where you want the scanned data to be typed, and scan a barcode.
The barcode data should be typed at the cursor location.

Usability Note: Simplicity of Bluetooth HID is greatly exaggerated.
Using SerialMagic Professional with many Bluetooth scanners is much simpler than with Bluetooth HID
and is many times more powerful.
