Setup a Bluetooth LaserChamp barcode scanner with SerialMagic on Symbian

This document outlines setup of a LaserChamp™ Bluetooth barcode scanner with SerialMagic Pro on Symbian OS8 on a Nokia 6630. This setup is also relevant for Symbian OS8 on other Nokia phones such as Nokia N70, Nokia N90. The setup also applies to Symbian OS7 on Nokia 6670, and Nokia 3230. This setup also works with Flic® and CHS7 Bluetooth barcode scanners.

Install SerialMagic Professional for Symbian using the Windows computer that the Application Installer option of the Symbian desktop software is running on that is connected to the Symbian mobile device. Then run SerialMagic Professional for Symbian from the Symbian device. In this example a Nokia 6630 will be used with the Nokia PC Suite.

Run the Nokia PC Suite, then choose “Install Applications”. Select the SerialMagic Professional for Symbian file appropriate* for your Symbian device, and click the Install button as shown below.

*Nokia 3230, 6260, 6670, 7610 require Symbian OS 7 build
Nokia 6630, 6681, 6682, N70, require Symbian OS 8 build
For Symbian Series 60 OS 9 phones such as Nokia E62, E61, 3250, N80, N91 click here.

After running the installer on desktop manager on the Windows machine you should get a prompt saying "Please finish the installation on the phone user interface". Continue the install process on Symbian phone, the first dialog (below left) shows the standard security warning from Symbian. Select Yes to continue, then proceed through the next screens answering Yes or OK. Note: SerialMagic should be installed on the Symbian phones memory (Ph. mem) this will allow swapping of the memory card when SerialMagic is active.

After SerialMagic is installed, launch it from the Symbian phone menu (below left). From he SerialMagic status screen selection Options > Registration. Provide the Hardware ID to your supplier of SerialMagic to obtain the registration code for the Symbian device. If SerialMagic was purchased from the Serialio.com store, login to the store account used for the purchase and there you will be able to generate the registration license key.

After SerialMagic has been registered, the Conn.status screen will reflect the change (below left.) Go to the Settings screen and select the desired settings, for example "End Flag Action" of "Return" that tells SerialMagic to 'press' the Return key after posting the data to the application. Then select Start directly from the Settings menu or by using the Options Menu.

When SerialMagic has been started the Symbian phone will prompt with "Activate Bluetooth in ofline mode?". At this point activate the desired Bluetooth device to connect with. If using a LaserChamp or Flic Bluetooth barcode scanner, briefly click the scan button to activate the Bluetooth radio on the scanner. Now select Yes, and Symbian phone perform a Bluetooth discovery to find nearby Bluetooth devices.

Once the LaserChamp Bluetooth laser barcode scanner is found, select it from the list then enter the passkey when prompted. The default Passkey for the LaserChamp and Flic barcode scanner is 0000. For Socket CHS7 series Bluetooth barcode scanners, the default passkey is 1234.

Once SerialMagic is connected to the Bluetooth scanner, it will hide itself and you should see the Symbian phone top (below right). At this point SerialMagic should be actively connected to the Bluetooth scanner and you can now proceed to your desired application to scan data directly into that application.

In this example Symbian Messages app will be used to demonstrate how SerialMagic can enter data from a Bluetooth barcode or RFID scanner directly to an application that is not 'scanner enabled'.

Start the Message app (below left) then select New message > Text message. Once the Text message is visible, place the cursor at the desired location in the message and scan the desired data which should then be placed directly at the cursor location (below right).

In summary, SerialMagic Professional for Symbain is a very powerful tool allowing data entry from a number of Bluetooth devices such as Bluetooth barcode scanners, Bluetooth RFID scanners, and other Bluetooth devices directly into Symbian applications without any programming. SerialMagic is the unsurpassed tool to instantly barcode enable, and RFID enable existing applications.
